PLANT A TREE FOR MUM THIS MOTHER’S DAY
Trees for Mum offers children of all ages a chance to honour and remember…
Trees for Mum will be held for the seventh consecutive year this Mother’s Day, Sunday 11 May. The free national event offers children of all ages a way to celebrate their mum and the beauty of life, by planting a tree in her honour.
The Trees for Mum program, which started as a small event in 2002 has grown into a national occasion with participants around Australia planting trees on Mother’s Day.
Trees for Mum Founders Deena Raphael and Lauren Adlam began the event as a way to remember their own mothers who both died of cancer.
“What began as a way for us to remember our mums on Mother’s Day has grown into a national celebration of all mothers – for those of us whose mums have died it’s a chance to remember. For those blessed to have a living mum, planting a tree is a lovely gesture and a great experience to share with family and friends. Kids love it!” says Deena.
Jon Dee, the Founder of Planet Ark and National Tree Day agrees. “Planting a tree for your Mum has two key benefits. Nurturing a seedling and watching it grow is a great way to acknowledge the effort that your Mum put into nurturing you,” he says. “Planting a tree for your Mum on Mother’s Day is also a great way to create a safer environment for Australia’s kids – a goal that all Mothers would support.”
To get involved, simply visit your local garden centre or native nursery to find your mum’s favourite native species (or another variety suitable to your local conditions). Then simply plant it in your garden or an area approved by your local council.
